ADJUSTABLE SOCKET

This was my first project that I did that worked around prostheses. It started as a summer scholarship with the New Zealand Artificial Limb Service in 2014.

The idea for this project was to tackle the issue of the constantly changing residual limb, reducing the need for excess sockets to be made.

Brief

Design a socket for above-knee amputees that utilises 3D
printing, is comfortable and promotes increased usage.

Design Development

Materials, manufacturing and design mechanics where explored to create the most efficient and safe way of conforming.

Functions

A: Slits along the socket allow for expanding and compressing.

B: The wire controlled by a dial tightens and loosens the socket.

C: 3D printed customisation allows for the perfect fit, as well as
changing areas of compression.
